Daffodils at Whipps

There are 16 members of the Whipps Family buried at the cemetery, the earliest is William Francis Whipps, aged three weeks, buried in 1833. There are 40 additional graves belonging to members of the general public, many of them are the graves of infants and children, including six children of the Gaw family, all buried with one headstone. History Sign

Health conditions in the 1800’s were abysmal. Deaths among women during childbirth and infant mortality were high. Families relied on faith in God as evidenced by the epitaphs. The graves are a sad reminder of the poor health conditions prevailing in the 1800s as compared with modern medical science.

Many plain fieldstones mark graves in the cemetery. These were often erected by those lacking the means to purchase a carved gravestone, or by those of the Quaker faith who believed an ornate headstone was ostentatious in the sight of God. There is a continued initiative to update and ensure the accuracy of recorded gravestones.

Vernay GraveNOTE: The numbers may not match the list for some graves were moved to St. John’s Cemetery, and others have unmarked gravestones. The cemetery was dowsed to locate unmarked graves, and all unmarked graves were marked with a cross on the brick. All children’s headstones are marked with a Maryland State flag.

Advocates of cemetery restoration have taken notice of Whipps. An excellent video by YouTube documenter, Bigg Jim Jones, created an excellent video of each of the headstones at Whipps.
