Mission Statement

It is the MISSION of the Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc:

  • TO PRESERVE and maintain this one-acre cemetery established in 1855–the physical grave monuments, the history of the old graveyard, and both heritage and native plant,
  • TO ENCOURAGE within the larger community a respect for Maryland’s many old burial grounds dating to earlier centuries and thereby to build an appreciation of our rich cultural heritage,
  •  TO DEMONSTRATE, through stewardship of the cemetery, ecologically sound horticultural practice that protects the environment,
  • TO DEVELOP AN ADAPTIVE USE for the cemetery for community education of the history and culture of 19th century Ellicott Mills, while demonstrating the use of heritage and native plants in the contemporary landscape, and
  • TO PROTECT A GREEN SPACE within the urban environment as a sanctuary for native plants, a haven for local wildlife, and a place of peace and tranquility to refresh the human soul.
