About Whipps Garden Cemetery

The Whipps Cemetery Garden educates and inspires Howard County residents to preserve old cemeteries as a small community park, showcasing local history and culture in the style of the famous garden cemeteries of the 19th century. At the Whipps Cemetery Park, Howard County Master Gardeners and community volunteers plant and maintain heritage and native species in a variety of different settings, interspersed by pathways, benches, angels, and around the tombstones. The plants are typical of those grown in Maryland gardens of the 1800s.

Free Seed Library

Located by the Herb & Rose Gardens

As part of an Eagle Scout project, the Free Seed Library was designed and constructed in 2024. Like a free book-lending library, this library encourages the public to donate and “check out” plant seeds including vegetable, annuals, perennials and native species.
