Volunteer
Weeding, mulching, planting, raking, pruning, and general nurturing of the garden is done by Master Gardeners and other community volunteers. Those who regularly maintain the park welcome additional volunteers, including student groups and families, who would like to “adopt” a small area to care for.

Thursday Work Days
UofMD Extension Howard County Master Gardeners and other dedicated community volunteers work in the gardens every Thursday from 9 until Noon, weather permitting, March through October. Any one is welcome to join them and learn in the process.
Adopting Gardens
Individuals, families, clubs and organizations may adopt a section in the Whipps Garden Cemetery. Guidelines are to re-create a garden that reflects the traditions of the Victorian age such as the planting of heritage and native shrubs, perennials, and annuals that will adapt to the garden environment. Adopters are required to follow accepted procedures for the care of the old marble gravestones. Adopters are urged to do research at the Howard County Historical Society on the person/family buried in their section.
Special Events
Volunteers are needed to help with public events and fund-raisers including Daffodil Day and the annual spring Plant Sale which may include speakers and exhibits. Also, the cemetery garden is often decorated with flowers and American flags on Memorial Day.
